Standard insurance protects you on all public roads, paved and unpaved, including the gravel routes over the Sedlo Pass and into the Prokletije. Genuine off-road driving - river crossings, unmarked trails and river beds - is not covered by any rental insurance in Montenegro, the same as everywhere in Europe. To collect a 4x4 you need a driving licence held for at least one year, your passport, and a debit card or cash. Minimum age is 23 for SUVs and 4x4 vehicles (21 for economy cars). Licences in a non-Latin script need an International Driving Permit alongside them. Cross-border trips into Albania, Bosnia, Croatia or Serbia are allowed - just tell us when booking so we prepare the green card insurance certificate. There is no extra charge for the paperwork, but we need advance notice.
